Emrys

Desert Dragon, age 8, with us since 2018

In July 2018, our Staff Druid was checking the fracture and found something we'd never seen before: a dragon egg. Previously, only hatched dragons have fallen through the Fracture.

The egg was burning hot to the touch. We weren't sure what to do! Fortunately, one of our Rangers, Cerys, has travelled to the deserts of the dragon realm and recognised the type of egg. She advised us the best condiditons and habitat to set up and 5 weeks later we welcomed Emrys to the family.

We brought in a lorry of sand to help create a sandy habitat for Emrys, which we warm with high-power heat lamps.

Because he was a newborn when he came to us, we were worried that too much socialisation with humans would make it difficult for him to return to the dragon realm and integrate with other dragons. To try and avoid that, we put our Red Dragon twins, Polly and Marco, in with Emrys for the first few of years of his life. Red Dragons also love the heat and are very sociable. They acted as wonderful big siblings to Emrys.

We were able to locate the twins' family and return them to the dragon realm in April 2022 (our first successful expedition after the COVID pandemic). Emrys was sad to see them go, but by then had learned a lot about being a dragon from them. He was happy to know they were reunited with their family.

In recent years, Emrys has been learning to make glass sculptures by melting the sand in his enclosure. This is a skill that a lot of his species possess and he didn't have to be taught. They are very beautiful and we even had one displayed in a local gallery (under the name of one of our human volunteers to maintain secrecy).

While we work very hard to try and reunite our dragons with their families in the dragon realm, or at very least a foster family of dragons of the same species, Emrys might remain with us for a long time. He was born here and has no memories of his family. Right now, he doesn't want to leave us, but who knows where his heart will take hime when he grows up.

Make a one-off or monthly donation to help us care for Emrys. Your support goes to feeding and housing our dragons. It also helps us pay for expeditions to return them to their families in the dragon realm.

Desert Dragons

Desert Dragons come from the hot and arid southeast of the dragon realm. They thrive best in the heat.

Key features of Desert Dragons include:

  • Sand-coloured for camouflage.
  • Breathe white-hot flame.
  • Create burrows in the sand to sleep at night.
  • Use their fire to melt sand into glass structures.
